Nine Inch Nails - 'Cursed Clock'

In recent years, Nine Inch Nail's Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have mastered the fragile art of ambient sound.  Notably, the duo have contributed to soundtracks for The Social Network and HBO's Watchmen, among other features.  

Now, ambient music can be tricky.  On the one hand, by its very nature, the genre must blend itself within the world or atmosphere it occupies.  On the other, it cannot be so bland that it is dead upon arrival and easily forgotten, even when it is playing (See muzak).  

The opening track from Ghosts VI - Locusts, 'Cursed Clock,' is enriching, yearning, pleading, and splendidly layered.  No sound or note goes wasted.  It is an audial demonstration of the tension between the persistence of time and the human psyche's capacity for monotony, amidst a global pandemic in which the world has come to a halt, while every single day seamlessly melds into the next without demarcation.  (Damn that cursed clock!).

NIN|JA = More Free Nine Inch Nails

Trent Reznor can't stop giving his music away for free.

His band, Nine Inch Nails, is ready to embark on a nationwide tour with the reunited Jane's Addiction and with Tom Morello's new project, Street Sweeper.

As a taste of things to come, the tour's website is offering NIN|JA - a free sampler EP featuring brand new songs from all three bands.

Back in 2008, the prolific Reznor released a four-volume instrumental Nine Inch Nails album, Ghosts I-IV, for just $5. The first disc could be downloaded for free.

Three months later NIN released another full album, The Slip, entirely for free.

A month after that, a tour sampler - Lights in the Sky. It featured songs from supporting acts like Deerhunter and Crystal Castles. That EP was also free.

Caught On Tape: Nine Inch Nails - 'March of the Pigs'

Need to let out a little angst?

Trent Reznor sure has done his share of venting. For all of the tortured songs that Nine Inch Nails has recorded over the years, few have matched the level of breakneck sonic annihilation that is 'March of the Pigs.' From NIN's 1994 album, The Downward Spiral, the song captures all the industrial nihilism Reznor could muster in a 3-minute single.

But it's not the rapid-fire drum beats or dehumanized noise that make 'March of the Pigs' so brutal. It's the two rare moments of Reznor's unaccompanied clarity that break from the grind to create a subtle, pop hook.

The music video for 'March of the Pigs' was stripped-down to a single, shaky camera shot, with the band performing live in a white room. The minimalistic video emphasizes the raw sound quality and aggressive nature of the band's performances.

What makes such a simple concept work so well here is Reznor's full-on rockstar takeover. He screams, he stumbles into the other band members, and he throws his microphone more than once - causing stagehands to enter the frame to fix problems. The video seems completely unrehearsed, and embraces its awkward flaws to emerge as a strong (and amusing) declaration of defiance.

NIN Releases Free Tour Sampler EP

2008 has been the year for Nine Inch Nails to give back to the fans.

Just three months ago, the band released the four-volume instrumental collection, Ghosts, for a mere $5 digital download, with the first volume available for free.

Last month, the band surprised everyone with the unexpected release of a new, full-length NIN album, The Slip. That album is also currently available for a free download, with the note, "Thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years -- this one's on me."

So, it's not surprising that Trent Reznor would already follow that up with yet another free offering.

Lights in the Sky is a 5-song EP featuring new music from bands supporting NIN on its summer tour: A Place To Bury Strangers, Crystal Castles, Deerhunter, and Does It Offend You, Yeah? The Nine Inch Nails track "Echoplex" is also included, along with bonus album art and web graphics.

Nine Inch Nails In Tune With 'Ghosts'

Nine Inch Nails released a brand new album this week.

Ghosts I - IV, the follow-up to 2007's Year Zero, is a 36 track set of instrumental arrangements composed and recorded last fall after the band declared its freedom from At nearly 2 hours, the collection finds Nine Inch Nails exploring sounds previously uncharted by the band.

According to Trent Reznor, via the band's official website:

"I've been considering and wanting to
make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made
sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a
very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound
and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and
the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy
the first four volumes of Ghosts."

"This music arrived unexpectedly as the result of an experiment. The
rules were as follows: 10 weeks, no clear agenda, no overthinking, everything
driven by impulse. Whatever happens during that time gets released as...

Nine Inch Nails announces new album

Trent Reznor and the gang have been keeping busy. A new DVD and a new album are both set to be released this spring.

After touring extensively behind their With Teeth album, Nine Inch Nails recently announced a February 27th release for a 24 track live DVD, Beside You In Time.

Then, just today, the band made a statement on their website that a new studio offering, to be titled Year Zero, will also be released this spring, with a date set for April 17th.

The six year wait between NIN's 1999 double-album The Fragile and 2005's With Teeth may have felt like an eternity to some fans, but now the band seems to have picked up steam again, and it will be exciting to see what they have to offer in 2007.
