Death Cab for Cutie - 'I Will Possess Your Heart'
The new Death Cab CD is released today. If their first single is any indication, the album is probably darker than its predecessors.When I have spoken to friends and acquaintances regarding their thoughts about 'I Will Possess Your Heart,' the consensus seems to be general disapproval. Some individuals have stated that the song sounds too goth, while others have expressed annoyance at the relentlessly repetitive chorus.
I, on the other hand, have found myself really appreciating this new sound. Concededly, the lyrics do have a stalkerish quality to them, but the music imposes such a subtle level of perseverance just underneath the words, that I find the song to be simultaneously inspiring.

Video Double Whammy - MGMT & Calvin Harris
There are a couple of pretty sweetastic music videos I ran across today that I felt deserved a posting.(1) The first is from Connecticut's MGMT (pronounced "management). Their spacey electronic masterpiece, 'Time to Pretend,' has been racing up the charts lately, and their video seems to be a great potential nominee for a VMA later down the road. With giant cats and multitudes of zebras, this vid is quite the visual experience:
(2) The second video is Calvin Harris' fairly recent single, 'Acceptable in the 80s.' A snappy 80s-inspired dance hit, this video revolves around the dissection of an otter-like animal and how the humans around it benefit from its "donations." Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd to Tour
Kid Rock has come a long way since his rapping days. He's now going to be touring with Lynyrd Skynyrd!:

David Allen Coe - 'You Never Even Called Me By My Name'
It's not hard to like an outlaw country song. Not only are they great to drink a beer to, but the best ones always seem to speak to you in all the right places. 'You Never Even Called Me By My Name' is the perfect example of such a tune.'You Never' is wrought mostly with bluesy despair during each verse, but once its rallying chorus kicks in, the song quickly transforms into a marshaling cry for all friends in low places:
"And I'll hang around as long as you will let me / And I never minded standin' in the rain / But you don't have to call me Darlin', Darlin' / You never even called me by my name!"
But perhaps the greatest part of 'You Never' is the final verse:
"Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison / And I went to pick her up in the rain / But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck / She got runned over by a damned old train!"

Florence And The Machine - 'Girl With One Eye'
Florence and the Machine is a self-proclaimed Grindcore band hailing from the UK. What is most enticing about this group is lead singer Florence's INCREDIBLE chops. Indeed, she lays out a soul puncturing vocal on this post's featured track, 'Girl With One Eye.'Give this tune a spin, and be sure to watch out; as the lyric suggests: "She'll cut your little heart out if you make her cry."

Caught On Tape: Green Jello - 'The Bear Song'
Green Jello, more commonly known as Green Jelly, was the self-proclaimed "worst band in the world" best known for the 1993 hit single 'Three Little Pigs.' With a Gwar-like stage show full of bizarre, costumed antics, the band's mission was to never let musicianship stand in the way of entertainment.
Green Jello's breakthrough album, Cereal Killer, was initially released as a "video only" compilation. It wasn't until the MTV success of the claymation 'Three Little Pigs' that the band agreed to do a full album.
The band followed up Cereal Killer Soundtrack with 1994's 333. Returning with a penchant for nursery-rhyme-inspired ditties, the band released a video for 'The Bear Song.' The lyrics are about a bear who went over a mountain to see what he could see. The punchline here is... the other side of the mountain was all that he could see.
The claymation and puppetry really send the video over the top. I get a real kick out of it, in a sophomoric sort of way.

STP Reunites!
In some most excellent news, The New York Times reports that Stone Temple Pilots will reunite, following a five year absence, to embark on a 65-city North American tour. The concert trek will begin May 17 in Columbus.
According to the recently-ousted-from-Velvet-Revolver frontman Scott Weiland, "The [STP] story's not finished."

Music City Afterthoughts
When you last heard from our travels, Steve and I had forged a trail south to Nashville and set up camp for the night.
The following day, we continued our adventure by exploring the downtown in search of good food and good music. This included checking out some of Stacy Mitchhart's live blues at B.B. King's on 2nd Ave. Mitchhart's acoustified cover of the Allman Brothers' "Whipping Post" was a definite highlight of the set.
From there, we continued our St. Paddy's soiree across the street at Mulligan's Irish Pub. Guinness and green beer flowed from the taps as Irish jigs were played by a small group in the corner.
Eventually we decided it would be in our best interest to round out our musical education at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge to take in some down-home, local country tunes. The venue's band of the evening was crammed onto the tiny stage - the guitarists stayed clear of the edge while the drummer sat awkwardly in the front window.
Before the night was up, we even stopped by Coyote Ugly, but just couldn't fight the moonlight.
After a two-night stint in Nashville, we decided to continue our exploration eastward to Knoxville and the Great Smoky Mountains.
One rainy 12-hour drive back and we were home in time for the Easter weekend. Overall, it was a great trip, and we made the most out of the time we had. It was definitely a welcomed getaway!

Don't Be Cruel, it's Bedtime for Toys.
It's been a couple of years since I last posted about Bedtime for Toys, and in that time the Los Angeles electro-funk rockers have increased their lineup and developed quite the following. Not to mention, the band was included in Rolling Stone's 25 Best Bands on Myspace. Next up, the Toys are releasing a covers album, to be titled BfT is Punk n' B.
The first leak from the new record is a fresh cover of Bobby Brown's ultra-slick 1988 hit, 'Don't Be Cruel.'
